The students in our classrooms today have grown up with technologies that were once the stuff of science fiction. Social media apps—and the devices we use to access them—have forever changed the way we communicate. For students born in the new millennium, however, this rapid communication revolution may lack context.

How did people communicate with each other in the early days of the internet? When were the first social media websites created? What ethical and legal questions have come with these technologies, and what are some of the risks they pose for young people? Help your students explore all of these questions and more with this timeline on the origin and evolution of social media:

This timeline is part of ABC-CLIO’s Pop Culture Universe: Icons, Idols, Ideas database, your platform for teaching American history through the cultural lenses of literature, radio, television, film, fashion, sports, technology, and more!
